Heavy machining

Came across this bike on bikernet.com. Here's what the pic said:
'72 FLH built by Ed Gillies. It's got a shock under the seat, 19" front wheel, 15" rear, high pegs, Del'orto's and a zillion lightning holes in a trillion pieces of aluminum

  1. hahaha, speedholes are usually drilled to decrease weight,
    but what´s the point in drilling holes in added pieces of steel/alu???
